Best shirt ever

I have owned Johnson Woolen Mill’s wool bibs for over 40 years and when it comes to warmth in snowy wet conditions, there is nothing better than! I just purchased my 2nd pair because the first pair couldn’t be repaired any more. I guess after 32 years, they didn’t owe me anything! I now have the bibs, a pair of pants for every day use and two of their long tail shirts. There is no equivalent product anywhere.

Great Shirt

Have worn it flintlock deer hunting in Northwest PA for several days. It provided a good mid-layer under a heavier wool hunting coat with temps in teens and low 20’s. Quality is top notch.

Long-Tail Button-Front Wool Shirt

I have two purchased online and two from a store in Superior WI. Just over two weeks ago I ordered one online, but a half-zip shirt was sent instead. All the shirts are fully satisfactory in all ways, and excellent in some. The wool quality doesn't quite reach that of the Woolrich shirt fabrics, which, sadly, are no longer available. The no. 86 fabric in the most recent shirt seems to be a tighter weave and more substantial than an example I tried several years ago. I wonder if Johnson has had more access to, and found less competition for, better wool since Woolrich shut down. Your patterns are excellent and sizing is generous but not excessive. Don't add any more fabric at the waist and hem. Don't delete sizes as Bean and others have done; maintain all the even chest sizes (42, 44, 46, etc.) as separate sizes, or else you'll be just like everyone else, won't stand out, and a good fit will just be luck. I like your two-seam sleeves (less elbow restriction) and lengthened cuff placket (easier roll-up), and your lined cuff fits in coat cuffs better than a double-fabric cuff. The lining of your breast pockets is a good and uncommon feature. I could see adding a 7th front button starting with the size 44 reg. and the 42 tall, but i's not essential. I've washed two new shirts cold, gentle, with no detergent to intentionally shrink them slightly and tighten the weave: fabric 45 size 46 tall and fabric 87 size 44 reg. Body length and circumference each shrunk 1.5", sleeve inseam 1", and they fit better. The recent 86 fabric is good and needs no 'firming'. The shirts rate 5 stars, based on quality of materials, comfortable and practical patterns, close sizing, good construction details, some unique features, and some beautiful fabrics. I outfitted myself at the Woolrich factory store in the 1970s, when the Pa. woods were still filled with their red & black fabrics during deer season. I've had or still have woolens and worsteds from Bean (most or all were Woolrich), Filson, Pendleton, and increasingly in recent years Johnson. I went past your store a couple times (prob. 1983-4) when I lived in Maine and had to collect water samples from high altitude ponds in ME, NH, VT for an acid rain study, but had no time to stop. Keep up the good work and good luck. Paul Eiler, Grand Marais, MN

Excellent wool shirt

Bought two of these shirts. They are very well made of a thick woolen material and well proportioned.
