I have multiple Filson coats; down parka, wool coat lined, wool lined jackshirt, and waxed canvas packer with wool liner. I received this jacket last Thursday and have to this is one excellent coat for working/hunting outdoors. First time I wore it temps were low 20’s possibly high teens and I was extremely warm out splitting and stacking wood with only a tee shirt underneath. This coat feels very light and comfortable, without the bulk of my Filson wool coats and yet every bit as warm, if not warmer. I’ve always wanted a red wool coat and like this coat so much, I ‘be already ordered your red/black plaid hunting coat along with your wool lined outdoor throw blanket. The two way zipper and snap closure will help keep the cold out a bit better than the traditional buttons.

I, too, have owned a Filson Mackinaw, and I am thankful that I got too fat for it because it led me to this beast of a coat. Whereas the Filson is fine for the ‘bushcraft’ enthusiast or hipster, this coat is for people who actually want to stay warm and comfortable.
Before I gush any more, I will say one thing. There was a defect in this coat when received. One side of one pocket was not sewn… slightly odd. My keys fell between the liner and wool the first time I wore it. It wasn’t really worth contacting the company because it was an easy 10 minute fix with a needle and thread.
The button holes need some breaking in, but trust me, this coat will get easier to button. The hood is a little on the small side. If you have a large hat you may have trouble getting this over your head. On the other hand, you don’t really want a large hood that falls off your head.
OK, back to gushing. I bought this coat in December of 2020, so this thing has been with me for a whole Michigan winter, and I never needed anything but this coat. I seriously wouldn’t have needed any other layers under this jacket. It is so warm, and the lining so comfortable, that only really a t-shirt is needed. With the cuffed sleeves, big collar, and wool blend it feels a lot like my Grandpa’s old Woolrich, but the Johnson looks much nicer.
I can’t wait to take this into the woods for deer season this year. I am guessing I will be way too warm walking in, but I will be cozy in the stand.
